Mass Timber and Design-Build: Why Wood is Good

May 12, 2021 @ 7:30 am - 9:30 am PDT

Presented by Inland Chapter

The Katerra Mass Timber team will share insights on the opportunities associated with using CLT on design-build projects. The team will walk through a full project lifecycle in the context of a mass timber project, while highlighting:

  • Key partnerships on a mass timber design-build project
  • Best practices for Design for Manufacturing
  • Opportunities for cost savings driven by efficient design
  • Onsite schedule savings
  • Hybrid structural strategies (wood and steel)

Katerra’s interdisciplinary team will share a case study of a successful mass timber design-build project.

Speakers:

Chester Weir, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

Chester Weir is a senior mass timber architect at Katerra, developing scalable solutions for mid and high-rise multi-family and commercial projects. His work is focused on the opportunities afforded by leveraging factory production and new national mass timber building codes, which have been pro-actively adopted in the Pacific Northwest where he works.Chester believes that complex design problems, when distilled to their basic requirements, can yield elegant solutions. Through collaboration and by integrating ideas from multiple disciplines, projects can be more impactful than the sum of their parts. Working closely with Katerra mass timber engineering, construction, and manufacturing, Chester has helped develop innovative mass timber solutions for high-rise housing and large commercial warehouses. In addition to his design work, Chester has presented his team’s mass timber work on panels at international conferences and seminars.
