OC/LA Chapter Breakfast Program – Joint DBIA and LCI Training Workshop “Lean In Design-Build”
July 17, 2018 @ 7:15 am - 10:00 am PDT
The revolution in AEC production has taken us from Design-Bid-Build, to Design-Build, to Design-Build Done Right and Progressive Design-Build. One might well ask, “Does it get any better than this?” For all of us who embrace the “pursuit of perfection” and “continuous process improvement” as a life quest, the answer is always, “yes!” For the last 20 years, DBIA and LCI have been attacking the same problem, AEC industry productivity improvement, on parallel tracks. We have come up with similar, sometimes identical insights and solutions, including the importance of collaboration, teamwork and continuous improvement. Used individually, the tools of Design-Build Done Right and Lean Construction enhance the chances of project success. Used together, the opportunities for success, innovative process improvements, and the delivery of ever-increasing value are significantly enhanced. However, not every innovative idea is Lean. This presentation reviews Lean Principles and they relate to Design-Build Done Right, and suggests lean tools and approaches, both current and under development, that will help any Design-Build project reap the potential benefits of Lean Construction.
Workshop Learning Objectives:
- Participants will understand fundamental concepts of Lean design and construction including identification of waste, definition of value and importance of reliable and predictable flow on project outcomes.
- Participants will be able to apply Lean Principles to distinguish between Lean and non-Lean practices and business solutions, with an understanding that the more lean our production methods become, the more our resources can focus on value realization for all stakeholders.
- Participants will understand how Lean reinforces Design-Build done right through examples of Lean practices and tools that align with the objectives of Design-Build done right.
- Participants will learn about four current research areas that constitute the next frontiers of Lean Construction Practice.
