Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed

The Port of Seattle had specified the level of power to be generated by the new facility. With design-build and its emphasis on teaming and cooperation, Mortenson was able to provide additional generators and power at no additional cost while working within the footprint of the previous facility.

Summary

The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Alternate Utility Facility (AUF) was constructed to provide a source of power for the entire airport and its operations in the event of a catastrophic loss of power from the local utility. The AUF was envisioned to provide a minimum of 20 Megawatts (MW) and to be expanded up to 30 MW to meet current and future needs. Through innovative leadership and collaboration during the design-build process, Mortenson Construction was able to provide the full 30 MW within the project budget and schedule. Additionally, Mortenson exceeded all the Minority/Women/Disadvantaged Business Enterprise participation goals through innovative teaming and procurement arrangements.
