November 15, 1958 – January 19, 2024
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of David D. Burton, FDBIA, a passionate advocate for design-build and a dedicated member of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA).
For over a decade, David actively championed the principles of design-build as part of DBIA, making significant contributions at both the Regional and National levels. He served on the Design-Build Certification Board for seven years and was a current member of the DBIA National Board of Directors. In 2021, his exemplary commitment to the industry was recognized when he was elected to the DBIA College of Fellows.
David was also an approved instructor for DBIA, contributing his expertise to the development of future professionals. He also served as a juror for the National Design-Build Student Competition and was a valued member of DBIA’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee.
DBIA National Board Chair Dana Pomeroy, AIA, LEED AP, DBIA, reflected on the loss of his colleague and friend.
“Finding the right words for the unimaginable loss of David Burton has been extremely difficult because he was truly larger than life itself. How can we recognize the life, heart and tremendous impression David has left on us all here at DBIA and in the construction industry?
Words can’t begin to describe what an amazing, thoughtful and giving human being David was. From the bottom of our hearts and souls, we want David’s family and friends to know that he was truly respected and loved by all who met and collaborated with him. He was extraordinary in every way and made DBIA a better organization through his kindness and passion for everyone to get along and seek common ground.
David, our hearts are broken, and our Board will miss you and your gentle giant approach. God bless you and may He send peace to your loved ones.”
David’s influence extended beyond boardrooms and committees. With a career dedicated to leading teams in the Justice and Corrections sector across the United States, he brought a wealth of expertise in teaming, project management and integrated project leadership. His passion for Design-Build Done Right® was evident in his commitment to ensuring teams embraced the mental shift and trust required to maximize DBIA Best Practices.
David’s impact on the design-build and AEC community will be remembered with gratitude. May he rest in peace.
