As the new home to the California Health and Human Services Agency, the Clifford L. Allenby Building reimagines the government office as a modern hybrid workplace, emphasizing occupant health and wellness and setting new benchmarks for energy and water conservation. This new 374,000 sq. ft. state office building accommodates a proposed occupancy of 1,200 staff. This project is a high-performance building that establishes a new standard for state buildings and sets the bar high for sustainable design. It employs a network of interrelated sustainability and workplace strategies to exceed the state’s ambitious energy and water targets, achieve zero-net energy, carbon neutrality, LEED® Platinum and Fitwel certifications, and a U.S. Resiliency Council five-star Platinum Rating. From façade to finishes, every aspect has been designed to have a positive impact on people and the planet.
Delivering Triple-Bottom Line Success
As the first project delivered under the State Project Infrastructure Fund (SPIF) and the first new office building constructed by DGS in the state’s capital in decades, the delivery of this project had to be flawlessly executed. Under this vision — and with all eyes on the project — the design-build team (including many DBIA certified professionals) delivered an exceptional building, leveraging the DBIA toolkit to its fullest under the flag of “Design-Build Done Right®.”
With flawless design-build delivery as an overarching driver, the team set forth to not just transform the workplace environment, but also to set new benchmarks for energy and water conservation, as well as provide best long-term value as stewards of the State of California’s tax revenue. The project was completed approximately $655,000 under budget inclusive of several Owner-initiated change orders.
