The County of San Diego’s Southeastern Live Well Center (SELWC) illustrates the unique power of inclusive design and community-driven development. As the county’s pioneering design-build project, the SELWC serves as a hub for health and social services, while also igniting economic growth and social cohesion within Southeastern San Diego. The project’s distinct features, such as trauma-informed design, a strong emphasis on community engagement and a steadfast commitment to sustainability, set it apart. These features not only distinguish the SELWC but also demonstrate how public buildings can mirror and elevate the communities they serve.

At the heart of this project was the Owner’s goal to exceed local hiring and economic inclusion targets, which the design-build team achieved with distinction. The project invested more than $8 million in local contractors, surpassing the initial goal of $6 million, while nearly 14% of the workforce hailed from the local community. This dedication to local engagement is evident by incorporating over 60 pieces of local art selected through a community-driven process.

Community-Centered Design with Lasting Impact

The SELWC’s unwavering commitment to sustainability is a cornerstone of its design. Anchored in trauma-informed principles, the facility ensures a welcoming environment that prioritizes safety and empowerment for all visitors. The two-story building, bathed in natural light and warm tones, was meticulously designed to offer clear wayfinding and eliminate stress-inducing elements. The project’s achievement of LEED® Gold certification and Net-Zero Energy status is a testament to its commitment to sustainability. This was made possible through the integration of photovoltaic solar panels, energy-efficient glazing and recycled materials, underscoring the SELWC’s environmental impact and design excellence.

In delivering the SELWC, the design-build team exceeded the county’s high standards for design excellence and community impact. The result is a public building that serves a vital purpose while also reflecting the local culture and building pride in the community.
