Modoc Medical Center Replacement Facility

Located in rural northeastern California, Modoc Medical Center (MMC) is a critical access hospital serving the residents of Alturas, California, and the surrounding area, covering 4,500 square miles. This project was designed and built to replace the existing County Hospital built in 1949. The existing facility was not able to provide the space or infrastructure required to meet current healthcare service delivery needs. Most departments did not meet the minimum State of California requirements for hospitals which made the execution of compliant alterations nearly impossible. The geographic reach of the district is large and MMC represents the only local option for acute care and clinical services in the community. The project consisted of a new hospital facility, outpatient and support services building, ambulance and maintenance building, helipad, mobile MRI trailer pad, parking lots and 1,300 feet of city roads.

Providing Best Value with Design-Build

To maintain long-term viability as a hospital the facility needed major help; however, retrofitting was deemed practically and economically infeasible. If hospital services were to continue in the community, a new seismically compliant building was required – one that provides the infrastructure to deliver state-of-the-art healthcare, meet the future needs of the community and attract and retain quality physicians and staff. The highly collaborative project team successfully managed design-build to budget determining that three buildings, an acute hospital, outpatient clinic and support services building were the best value approach to meet the project goals. A reduction of rooms, combining and elimination of other spaces reduced the footprint by nearly 3,800 s.f. The team not only provided best value but also completed the project one month ahead of schedule. The happy Owner says, “We are really amazed at how well this team has worked to bring this vitally important project to our community. Their work will be appreciated well into the future and means more than they will ever realize to us.”
