Sharp Mesa Vista Expansion and Modernization Project

Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed

The design-build delivery method was selected in order to fully integrate all sectors of the team into one entity that would be focused on patient safety through design and construction. Working in an environment where patients may seek to harm themselves, brings a sobering challenge to a construction project.

Summary

The Sharp Mesa Vista Expansion and Modernization Project occurred in a fully occupied and operational acute psychiatric hospital. With over 5,000 inpatient discharges a year, the 1960s era facility is San Diego County’s largest privately-operated psychiatric hospital. Over six construction phases, three buildings were renovated to provide the facility’s diverse patient groups and treatments programs with a modern, safe and healing-oriented space that will serve the local community for several generations.
