The I-85 corridor between Charlotte and Greensboro has long been one of the most congested corridors in the state, necessitating a massive reconstruction initiative that included the erection of 2,900-foot-long dual bridges. The new dual bridges are 72 feet wide and 2,914 feet long, spanning a wetland, the river, and three railroad tracks. By conducting partnering sessions with utility owners, the design-build team successfully managed the utility coordination for this and other facilities that were in conflict with the new construction. The team successfully reached final completion on schedule and was able to open the adjacent US 29/70 bridge 100 days early, qualifying for a $650,000 incentive payment. Additionally, the team delivered the project under the original budget of $136 million.
