The 51,000-square-foot Science Center at Lewis University addition includes laboratories, classrooms and support spaces, providing for both individual research and collaborative problem-solving all without one traditional lecture room. Since the new facility was to be built in the heart of an active campus, the construction team developed a detailed phasing and demolition schedule early on, enabling the design team to incorporate certain details into the construction documents that would seamlessly facilitate phasing and logistical requirements. The addition includes more than 31 environmentally-friendly features, including innovative design, solar-powered pathway lighting, low mercury lighting, and daylight harvesting were incorporated. The new Science Center exceeds the University’s goal and achieved a LEED Silver certification from the USGBC.
