Cornish Creek Water Treatment Plant and Water Supply Facilities Improvements

Design-Build Team Summary

The Cornish Creek Water Treatment Plant is located on Lake Verner, a primary source of fresh water for the surrounding community. The area is filled with community amenities, and there was particular consideration put into building this facility without disrupting the amenities neighboring it. The floating pump station also benefits the operation and maintenance of the facility. It fully protects the pumps inside of the steel barge (wet well), reducing the risk of the raw water pumps bottoming out as the reservoir level fluctuates. The barge intake screen design allows for easy access for regular cleaning and maintenance, without impacting normal operations. Originally, the plan was to increase the size of the raw water pipeline. Progressive Design-Build offered an opportunity for more creative thinking, helping the team formulate a better plan. The revised design saved the county money and gave the community a long-term, reliable raw water capacity in a short time frame.

Keeping Safety, Community and Sustainability at the Forefront

Protection of the public was a constant consideration due to accessible areas of the reservoir that were near the construction areas. Heavy machinery, falling objects and exposed wiring are inherent to construction sites. Effective traffic management was essential to minimize risks to the public. Managing the environmental impact included attention to habitat disruption, soil erosion, and pollution control of water and park areas. The team employed sustainable construction practices and gave special consideration to minimize impacts.

Demonstrating exceptional community integration, Crower partnered with local Engal Scouts and Newton County to address a pervasive midge-fly infestation by placing bat houses in strategic locations. The team chose to route the new finished water force main piping through an existing utility easement to minimize clearing trees and impacting the surrounding environment.
