This Missouri bridge program showed that right-sized innovation can deliver extraordinary results using design-build. It stands out as a model of innovation, collaboration and impact. Through MODOT’s fixed price, variable scope approach, 31 aging bridges were replaced ahead of schedule and under budget. The team delivered on solutions that traditional delivery might have dismissed. The team’s use of DBIA best practices, from risk-focused management to partnering and shared accountability, fostered transparency and trust. Innovative techniques such as SDCL steel girders and single-stage abutment cap construction elevated safety and efficiency. By reconnecting rural communities and strengthening local economies, this small project delivered truly transformative results.
