Due to the unexpected closing of a nearby hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital anticipated a dramatic need for ICU beds and needed to act quickly. The Grady Memorial Hospital Bed Expansion project, completed in just eight months, exemplifies the seamless collaboration and expedited decision-making across the design and construction phases that design-build excels at, setting a new benchmark for the potential timeline for delivery of healthcare facilities. The project added two state-of-the-art, 26-bed critical care units on the ninth and tenth floors of Grady Memorial Hospital, significantly enhancing the hospital’s capacity to provide specialized care.

Remarkable Delivery Speed Without Sacrificing Innovation

The accelerated project schedule did not come at the cost of innovative, creative solutions. The hospital expansion utilizes a vacuum pump plumbing system, a pioneering solution that eliminates floor penetrations into lower floors. By relocating waste lines to the ceiling instead of below the floor, this innovation prevents leaks and potential contamination of patient rooms on lower floors and provides a more efficient means of identifying and resolving clogs. The result is a system that minimizes maintenance challenges, promotes environmental sustainability by reducing water wastage and, most importantly, protects the health of patients and visitors.

The installation of patient lifts in every room minimizes the risk of staff injuries by providing a mechanical means of transferring patients, reducing physical strain on healthcare workers and enhancing patient safety. The design of the rooms also accounted for visibility and accessibility, allowing for constant patient monitoring and quick medical response.
