For more than 50 years, the Loma Verde Community and Aquatic Center served as a hub for the city of Chula Vista, offering a place where neighbors gathered, learned and stayed active. Over time, however, the facility could not keep pace with the evolving needs of the community. The city sought to honor the beloved aspects of the original center while creating a modern space that serves Chula Vista community members by delivering updated amenities, expanded programming and durability for decades to come. To achieve this, they turned to Progressive Design-Build to deliver a modern 25,800 sq. ft. replacement facility.
A key goal of this project was to create a flexible facility capable of accommodating a wide range of uses. The city envisioned hosting a rotating lineup of recreation and arts classes for all ages, including fitness, martial arts, dance and painting. Equally important was ensuring the new facility could support several community services, including day camps, after-school programs and community rentals. The Aquatic Center complements these offerings with swim lessons, water fitness classes, casual open swim times, competitive lap swimming, deep water fitness classes and team rentals.
Teamwork Built Through Trust
The EC Constructors and COAR Design Group team had partnered with the city of Chula Vista on three previous design-build projects, and that level of trust shows throughout the project’s creation. Originally planned as a partial build, the team’s proven track record of open communication, efficient problem solving and strong collaboration convinced the city to bring the team on to spearhead the full project.
The result was a replacement facility delivered on time, with risks mitigated through shared contingency and allowance pools, and a final product that exceeded community expectations.
In the end, this project exceeded the Owner’s expectations, delivering a modern, versatile resource that will serve the surrounding community for years to come.
