Main Street Bridge (Duval County) Historical Renovation Project (SR 5) Emergency Design-Build

Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed

Restoring this historic bridge to accommodate modern traffic, retain its appearance and without disturbing surrounding (also) historic buildings and modern utilities was a challenge. Discoveries such as a void resulting from a leaking pipe (which had to be repaired) and contaminated soil required innovation by the design-build team. It took extensive coordination and teamwork to complete this project, which was delivered 49 days ahead of schedule.

Summary

The design-build team of Hal Jones Contractor and WGI successfully replaced and restored the historic US 17 Main Street Bridge over Hogans Creek in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Designed in the early 1900s by famed architect Henry Klutho, the bridge, is a contributing element to the Springfield Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The design-build team provided innovation, expedited plans delivery, permitting and accelerated project completion to reopen this high-volume roadway to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Through numerous unforeseen challenges, the team delivered the project 49 days early, earning an incentive bonus, while restoring history.
