Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta was overdue for an upgraded media tower, as well as needing improvements to enhance driver and spectator safety. They selected the Carroll Daniel Construction design-build team, with a hard deadline that would make the project a race to the finish. With only 6 months in design prior to starting construction, the project had to be completed in time for the largest event the track hosts–the Petit Le Mans.
The program included: demolition of an existing facility and construction of a 4-story tower with Executive Suites, Race Operations, Media, Rooftop Viewing, and a separate Medical Facility to house emergency response teams, a triage facility, and ambulance resources. The new state-of-the-art tower was constructed next to an active pit road and pedestrian bridge. With such a tight schedule and constantly changing program, the project could not have been successfully completed without utilizing the design-build delivery method.
The Race to Design-Build Success
NASCAR owns the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta facility and controls its major capital outlay programs. Road Atlanta, LLC the Operator, manages the operations of the track and is responsible for its financial performance. The new state-of-the-art tower was constructed around the schedule of the largest event the track hosts each year–the Petit Le Mans road race. With such a tight project schedule, replacing the outdated race media tower at the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta would prove to be quite a challenging project.
An existing 3-story concrete structured tower was demolished and replaced in the same location right next to an active pit road and a pedestrian bridge. The design-build team completed the project on an active track, on schedule, within budget, without interfering with any track events, and with zero lost time due to accidents.
