Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed

CTDOT carefully considered the chosen project for its first design-build project. It had to be complex enough to promote the innovation that design-build propagates, yet it was uncharted territory when it came to road and bridge building in Connecticut. The Route 8 Bridgeport Project, situated between I-95 and the Merritt Parkway, had traffic and logistical constraints that would have required several years of design and construction using a conventional project approach. CTDOT chose design-build coupled with ABC because it was the only approach that would drastically reduce the project duration and impact on the local highway system and community.

Summary

The Rehabilitation of Four Bridges, Route 8 Project in Bridgeport, CT was the first design-build project for CTDOT. The design-build team of Manafort and WSP worked closely with CTDOT to successfully complete this complex $34.7 million project on time and within budget in 15 months. The team rehabilitated four bridges and reduced construction from two full construction seasons to just 24 days. This project is hailed as a fabulous testament of both design-build and ABC.
