Certified Design-Build Professionals come from traditional design and construction backgrounds across public and private sectors. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Owners
- Architects
- Engineers
- Design-Builders (General or Specialty Contractors, Construction Managers)
- Project Managers
- Legal Professionals
- Academics

Applicant must have the following:
Educational Background
- Option 1 — Baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university in architecture, engineering, construction management or DBIA approved field of study.
- Option 2 — For candidates not holding a degree in an approved field of study or no degree. Functional resume is required (see Certification Guidelines & Requirements for further details).
Experience
Applicant must verify required years of substantial, documented, direct hands-on project experience. Please provide a minimum of three (3) projects that were completed or are currently being constructed. If more than three (3) projects are needed to demonstrate the applicant’s experience, the applicant shall complete the required form for each additional project.
- For Educational Background Option 1: Three (3) years total of substantial direct hands-on experience.
- For Educational Background Option 2: Six (6) years total of substantial direct hands-on experience.
References
Three professional references submitted in the online reference form detailing the candidate’s design-build knowledge and experience. At least one must be an owner/client on a project included in the application.
Core Courses
All candidates must complete the following core courses:

Electives
Candidates must complete 18 hours of elective credit. Credits can be earned through DBIA courses, conferences, webinars or DBIA Regional programs available in our Learning Center.
