Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed

Sabra is a strong proponent of the design-build delivery method, believing that a trusting, reliable partnership between fully integrated teams yields the best combination of quality, cost and schedule. Buy-in for utilizing design-build started at the top of Sabra’s organization with the board and project sponsor, and was adopted at all levels of the organization. This model was particularly necessary and useful because frequently the schedule was in play and deadlines were tight, causing the teams to move into the construction phase prior to having design fully vetted. In this scenario, design-build is the only delivery method that works successfully.

Summary

In response to rapid category growth, Sabra, producer of America’s top-selling hummus, partnered with Dennis Group on a fast-track, 16-month, 106,475-square-foot expansion to double production capacity at their South Chesterfield facility. While avoiding operational disruptions, the team designed a truly unique facility that seamlessly blended the expansion with the original building, adhered to the latest food safety standards and achieved LEED Gold New Construction Certification, a first for a manufacturer in Virginia.
