Ventura County Medical Center Hospital Replacement Wing

Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed

Originally planned as a two-phase project, during discussions with the owner and hospital staff, the design-build team realized that condensing it into one phase would enable them to complete necessary spaces that would be impacted by work in the first phase. The owner agreed to a six-month extension in order to do so. This extension also allowed the team to incorporate other requested design changes prior to occupation.

Summary

Designed as a place of recovery and hope, the new VCMC-HRW provides Ventura County with one of the nation’s most technologically-advanced healthcare facilities. As one of the largest healthcare design-build projects in California using collaborative plan review, the team completed the HRW in just four years. The project team implemented an unprecedented hybrid design-build approach to address strict government mandates, modest budget, seismic response requirements and ongoing hospital operations. The result was an intensely collaborative, innovative, fluid and rapid-response team that designed and delivered a critical project on time and on budget for the community.
