Federal Infrastructure Investments
More than $530 billion has been invested in public infrastructure, semiconductor and clean energy since 2021, according to Invest.gov. This includes funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and CHIPS and Science Act. Spending began in 2022 with plans to spread it out over five years to rebuild roads, bridges and railways; invest in airports; provide high-speed internet access; and address climate concerns. Last year alone, the federal government spent $44.8 billion on infrastructure, transferred an additional $81.5 billion to states and allocated over $210 million for repairing and rebuilding after natural disasters –– including public utilities like power lines and water storage facilities.
Why Investment Is Important
Despite these investments, challenges remain. Approximately 44% of the nation’s bridges are in good condition, down 3 percentage points since 2012. Furthermore, 11% of rural roads and 32% of urban roads were in unsatisfactory condition in 2020. In 2022, 16.7% of American households did not have a fixed broadband subscription at home, an important tool for expanding educational, economic and health opportunities.
Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy (P.D.O.) Eric Van Nostrand explained in a U.S. Department of Treasury story that infrastructure investment in the United States has declined in recent decades, and reversing this trend would bring significant economic benefits by strengthening long-term productive capacity and creating opportunities for Americans in disadvantaged communities.
